What is International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination?

On 21 March 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 peoplein South Africa against the apartheid "pass laws". The UN then declared this day to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination, while also ending the policy of apartheid (segregation) in South Africa.
