International Literacy Day

What is International Literacy Day?

International Literacy Day is designated by the UN to highlight the importance of literacy, celebrating reading and writing. People worldwide are reminded on how amazing it is to read and write, to assist with reading books, stories, and information.

When is International Literacy Day?

Sunday, September 8

Activities:

  • Book Swap: Organize a book swap event where children can bring gently used books from home to exchange with their peers. This promotes sharing, recycling, and the joy of discovering new stories to read.
  • Author Visit: Invite a local children's author or illustrator to visit the childcare centre and share their books and creative process with the children. This provides an opportunity for children to learn about storytelling and the world of books from a real-life author.
  • Literacy-themed Crafts: Plan literacy-themed craft activities where children can create bookmarks, puppets, or story stones inspired by their favourite books. Encourage them to use their imagination and creativity to bring their favourite stories to life.
  • Dress-Up as Book Characters: Encourage children to dress up as their favourite book characters for the day. Host a costume parade where children can show off their costumes and share why they chose their character.
