NSW Parliamentary Committee Report on Essential Worker Housing released

Members will recall ACA NSW's efforts to help our early childhood educators and teachers with their housing needs, especially in the context of cost-of-living challenges.

Through the NSW Parliamentary Committee on Essential Worker Housing, ACA NSW is pleased to advise members that the NSW Parliamentary Committee agreed to include 4 out of the 5 NSW-specific recommendations in its report to the NSW Parliament, namely:

  • legislative acknowledgement and protection of essential workers (ie to include early childhood educators and teachers);

  • removing structural planning impediments in order to increase supply of affordable housing for essential workers

  • transparency of local governments to ensure supply meets the demands of essential workers

  • removal of/exemption from government stamp duties and charges for essential workers

The fifth that was not included in their final report was "... a new liveability index for every local government area to help essential workers".

The other five recommendations from ACA NSW are for the Federal Government to consider (with hopefully assistance from the NSW Parliament).

ACA NSW will continue to keep members updated on its efforts to assist early childhood educators and teachers to be able to afford to live close to their workplaces.
