What is Remembrance Day?

Remembrance Day commemorates the loss of Australian lives from all wars and conflicts. On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, a minute silence is observed and dedicated to soldiers who died fighting to protect the nation.

Activities: 

  • Moment of Silence: Begin the day with a moment of silence to honour the fallen soldiers and reflect on their sacrifices. Explain to the children the importance of remembering and paying tribute to those who have served in wars and conflicts.
  • Art and Craft: Provide materials for children to create paper poppies, a symbol of remembrance. They can paint or colour paper petals red and attach them to green stems to create their own poppy flowers.
  • Story Time: Read books to the children about Remembrance Day, war, and peace during group time or story time.
  • Thank You Cards: Encourage children to make thank you cards for veterans and active-duty service members.
