What is a Leap Day?

February 2024 will have an extra day added to the calendar, which means we get an extra 24 hours thanks to it being a leap year. February is the shortest month of the year, but every four years we add a leap day. 


When is the Leap Day?

Thursday, 29 February


Activities:

  • Make a handprint frog 
  • Play leap frog
  • Make a time capsule to open in 4 years time at home 
  • Write a letter to your future self to open in 4 years time
  • Craft a newspaper frog
  • Explore Calendars and how to read them
  • Froggy hop: since Leap day is all about leading, have a “froggy Hop” experiences where children can pretend to be frogs and take turns hopping like frogs.
  • Storytime: Read books about frogs, leap year, or even stories that involve characters taking big leaps or changes.
  • scavenger hunt: Children play a scavenger game where children need to find 29 objects or objects with the number 29 on them.
  • Number game: children must jump 29 times or point and count 29 things they can see.
  • Group time: Discuss the concept of a leap year with the children.
